My name’s Drew and I work at Hansen’s Dairy Outlet in Cedar Falls, IA. We sell your Original Snack Sticks. They’ve always been my go-to for snacking on-the-go. Recently I noticed our most recent shipment had a shorter, stouter look. After snacking on one I realized that I enjoyed it more than the previous taller, thinner ones! Maybe it’s just getting more to chew makes me think I’m eating more. Plus they’re just easier to carry around my pockets or bags.
Anyways, just thought I’d send some positive feedback to a great local business. Obviously I love the flavor of these sticks and the ingredients list doesn’t have a bunch of crap like other brands do. And I know that you guys are treating your cows with respect!
Keep it up!
First off want to say that my husband loves your sticks…..we always purchase on our weekly grocery trip. He makes sure he has plenty on hand. With his profession he is on the road daily….and loves these for a quick snack. We always love to support local Iowa products if we can.
Timber Ridge Beef and Omega 3’s
Timber Ridge flax fed omega 3 beef is derived from dairy cattle that have been fed a feed supplement along with the regular grains and grasses. Our feed supplement contains flax algae. Algae normally begins the food chain in the ocean, where it is eaten by tiny fish, which are eaten by larger fish. The omega 3’s in the algae are stored in the fish, making it healthy to eat. Timber Ridge omega 3 beef has been provided the same algae. The beef from the cattle is high in omega 3’s ALA, DHA, EPA and CLA.
Timber Ridge beef is healthier because it is high in Omega 3’s like fish. Although Timber Ridge beef still has some saturated fats like all beef, the high unsaturated Omega 3 fats produce blood chemistry which counteracts the unhealthy aspects of the saturated fat.
A recent Harvard study reported that consuming a daily average of 400mg of EPA and DHA from fish was very healthy; in fact, it increased life expectancy by 2.2 years. However, studies of people taking fish oil capsules, in contrast, show mixed results. There may be two reasons. People taking fish oil capsules may not be reliable in taking the capsules regularly. Or, the fish oil is refined from fish products. In the refining process to take out possible contaminants like mercury, other useful compounds which accompany the EPA and DHA are also lost. Since the whole algae gets into the fish food chain naturally, and the same whole algae gets into Timber Ridge beef, we expect to show soon that the Timber Ridge beef has an impact on the healthy markers in the blood stream of humans, similar to fish.
No, the algae fed to Timber Ridge beef is grown in very pure water on land in large tanks. Algae in the ocean can collect mercury from the pollution in the ocean from runoff. When fish eat ocean algae containing mercury, they retain it. Timber Ridge beef gets pure algae from pure water in tanks on land, and hence it can have no mercury.
Yes, our algae is a naturally occurring algae found in the ocean, and it is fed all natural products in land-based water tanks. Furthermore, it is not a GMO product.
Yes, everything else being the same, Timber Ridge beef is about $.35 per pound more costly to produce, due to the cost of the flax and ultra-pure algae feed supplement.
Yes, Timber Ridge Flax Fed Beef is certified by the USDA and is in complete compliance with all regulations and requirements of the verified flax fed program.
Until recently, no one believed that flax seed and algae could be fed to cattle to produce considerable amounts of omega 3’s in the beef. Timber Ridge works with NBO 3 founder Bernie Hanson who worked with the Kansas State University to formulate the idea and, in tests on dozens of cattle at KSU, proved it worked. The cattle were healthy, and the beef was up to 10 times higher in Omega 3’s than traditionally fed cattle.
Several years ago we sold a family owned commercial feedlot. The commercial feedlot was run to maximize cattle gains, optimize pen space, and keep cattle alive and performing well by using an aggressive antibiotic program. It was a daily exercise in crisis management! In 2006 we started Timber Ridge Cattle Co. and devoted a significant proportion of the operation to the production of a more healthy beef product both in terms of the cattle and the meat. Published studies at that time by KSU showed significant improvement in herd health and an increase in the Omega’3 fatty acids in the beef muscle by feeding flax-seed in the ration. We began implementing these feeding practices and the results have been encouraging. Testing of our first flax-fed beef showed a 500% increase in Omega 3’s and a 5 – 1 Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratio. We feel as though our pasture based flax-fed beef program has turned us 180 degrees from the old commercial feedlot days
We choose the smoked meat process to deliver our high Omega-3 beef to the consumer because of its use of low heat. Exposures to high heat will covert healthy fats into trans-fats. Notable effects of Omega-3’s in human diets include improved immunity, reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and anti-inflammatory relief for rheumatoid arthritis.
In 2013 we began to add 30% Berkshire pork to our flax fed beef product to enhance the tenderness and flavors of our sticks. Berkshire Pork is the oldest breed of pork in existence today, and raised for the meat’s distinctive color and marbling – two character traits that help to make our sticks tender and flavorful every time.
Timber Ridge breakfast snack sticks contain no MSG or sodium nitrite. The flax fed beef and pork we use is meticulously trimmed 85% lean and contains only 70 calories. Our products need no refrigeration so they can be safely enjoyed while camping, traveling, or in a packed lunch.
